One drawer, four zones
Sort by frequency, not by category. Pens with pens is why the drawer stopped working.
The sort
Empty the drawer completely onto the desk. Then put every item into one of four piles:
Four zones
- Daily — you touch it most working days.
- Weekly — it comes out sometimes, reliably.
- Rarely — a few times a year, but you would miss it.
- Never — you cannot remember the last time.
For most people the "never" pile is about half the drawer. Dead pens, a cable for a device sold years ago, three sets of allen keys, a phone case that does not fit anything you own.
Why frequency beats category
The instinct is to group like with like: all pens together, all cables together. It looks organised and it fails within a month, because you are not reaching for "a pen" — you are reaching for the pen, the one you use, which is now buried among eleven you don't.
Sorted by frequency, the daily items occupy the front of the drawer where your hand naturally lands, and everything else is behind them in descending order of how much you care.
Where each zone goes
- Daily — front of the drawer, or on the desk if it is genuinely constant.
- Weekly — back of the same drawer.
- Rarely — out of the desk entirely. A box on a shelf, a drawer in another room. It is not desk furniture.
- Never — out of the house. Recycling for the dead pens and old cables, donation for the rest.
Making it stick
The zones collapse back into one pile because nothing physically holds them apart. That is the only job a drawer organiser does, and it is worth doing — but do the sort first. Buying the tray before the sort means paying to store things you were going to throw away.
Measure the drawer before ordering. Interior dimensions, not exterior, and check the depth as well as the footprint — a tray that is slightly too tall stops the drawer closing.
What we'd buy
Only worth buying after the sort, and only if the zones keep collapsing.
An expandable drawer organiser
Adjustable compartments matter more than the number of them, because your zones are not the same size as anyone else's. Measure the drawer's interior first.
