Thermal label printers: what to check before you buy
Four things decide whether a desktop label printer will fit your setup. One of them is buried in the listing, and it's the one that catches Mac users out.
The compatibility line, first
Several popular 4x6 thermal printers advertise Bluetooth printing for iPhone, Android, and Windows — and then, further down the listing, note that macOS connects over USB only. If your Mac is where you generate labels, that single line changes your setup: you need the printer within cable reach of the computer, not tucked on a shelf across the room.
It isn't a defect, and it isn't hidden — it's usually stated plainly in the third or fourth bullet. It's just easy to skim past when the headline says "Compatible with iPhone, Android, Windows & Mac." Read the bullets, not the title.
Before ordering, find the sentence in the listing that names your operating system and your connection method together. If the listing never puts those two words in the same sentence, assume USB and plan the desk around it.
What "thermal" actually buys you
A direct thermal printer has no ink, no toner, and no cartridges. It works by heating specially coated label stock, so the only consumable you ever buy is labels. That's the real argument for one over an inkjet: no cartridge that dries out between order weeks, and no colour cartridge you never asked for running the print head.
The trade-off is that thermal labels fade with heat and sunlight over time. That's fine for a shipping label read by a scanner within a week. It is not fine for anything you need to stay legible on a shelf for a year — for that you want a different label type entirely.
Label sizes, decoded
4x6 inches is the shipping label standard. USPS, UPS, FedEx, and every major marketplace generate labels at that size by default, which is why nearly every desktop thermal printer is built around it.
Most of these printers accept a range of widths — commonly around 1.5 to 4.1 inches — which covers the other sizes you might eventually want:

Buy the printer for 4x6 and treat the rest as a bonus. If barcode or product labelling is your actual primary job, a smaller dedicated label maker is usually the better tool.
Roll or fanfold?
Same printer, same labels, different desk life.
- Rolls sit behind or inside the printer on a spindle. Tidy, continuous, and ideal if the printer has a permanent home on a bench.
- Fanfold stacks flat like accordion paper. It stores in a drawer, travels well, and is the better choice if your shipping station is also where you eat dinner.
Rolls are marginally cheaper per label at volume. Fanfold wins on packability. If you're clearing the table before every meal, that's not a close call.
Speed and resolution — how much matters
Listings advertise print speed in millimetres per second and resolution in DPI. For shipping labels, 203 DPI is the standard and is entirely sufficient — barcodes scan reliably, and addresses are crisp. 300 DPI matters if you're printing small product labels with fine text or dense barcodes.
Speed claims are measured under ideal conditions with the printer already warm. The honest way to read them: anything in the range these printers advertise will print a single label faster than you can pack the box. Speed only becomes a real factor if you batch dozens of labels at once.
Before you order
- Your OS, your cable. Find the sentence naming your operating system and its connection method.
- Label stock is direct thermal. Not "thermal transfer" — that needs a ribbon and won't work in these.
- The first roll is included, or it isn't. Some ship with a starter roll, some with nothing. Order labels at the same time either way.
- Check the return window and test it on a real order before the window closes. Here's the test.
