Match the fix to the noise

Three products, three different problems. Buying the wrong one is why people conclude that none of them work.

Identify the noise first

Three kinds of noise matched to three different fixes Speech through a wall pairs with foam earplugs. Steady mechanical noise pairs with noise-cancelling headphones. Unpredictable household sound pairs with a white noise machine. What you hear What answers it Speech through a wall voices, a TV, a call Foam earplugs cuts the frequencies speech rides on Steady mechanical noise traffic, a fan, an air conditioner Noise-cancelling headphones built for repeating waveforms Unpredictable household sound a door, a dog, footsteps White noise machine raises the floor so nothing spikes
Buying the wrong one of these three is why people conclude that none of them work.

Sit at your desk and listen for a minute. What you hear falls into one of three categories, and each has a different answer.

Speech through a wall

A conversation in the next room, a TV, someone on a call. The problem is not volume — it is that language is impossible to ignore. Your brain processes it whether you want it to or not.

Foam earplugs work best here, and they cost almost nothing. They cut the high frequencies that carry speech intelligibility, which is exactly the part that hooks your attention. Cheap, effective, and unglamorous.

Steady mechanical noise

Traffic, an air conditioner, a fan, a fridge, a neighbour's heat pump. Constant, low, and broadband.

Noise-cancelling headphones are built for exactly this. The technology works by predicting a repeating waveform and cancelling it, so it excels at constant noise and does relatively little for sudden or irregular sound. If you have tried them against a noisy household and been disappointed, this is why — they were solving a problem you did not have.

Unpredictable household sound

A door, a dog, footsteps upstairs, a child. Irregular and impossible to anticipate, which is what makes it disruptive — each one pulls your attention because each one is new.

A white noise machine helps here by raising the floor so individual sounds do not stand out against silence. It does not remove them; it makes them less startling. It also has the advantage of leaving your ears free, which matters if you take calls or need to hear a doorbell.

A note on volume: the point of sound masking is to sit just above the level of the noise you are covering, not to drown it. If you keep turning it up, the machine has become part of the problem.

What order to try

Cheapest first, because the cheapest fix is often the right one. A packet of foam earplugs costs less than a coffee and settles the speech question in a day. Only when that fails is it worth spending on the others.

What we'd buy

Only buy for the noise you actually have.

For unpredictable household sound

A white noise machine

Mechanical fan-based units produce a broader, less repetitive sound than looped recordings. Adjustable tone matters more than a long list of sound effects.
