Four upgrades that leave no marks

The rule for renting

Anything that improves a rented workspace should attach to furniture, not to the building. Desks you own. Walls you do not. That single distinction rules out most of what gets recommended in home office articles, and it still leaves plenty.

Be wary of adhesive mounting strips on painted walls. They are marketed as removable, and on some paint they are. On others they take the paint with them, which is exactly the outcome you were avoiding.

1. A clamp-on monitor arm

Clamps to the desk edge, holds the screen where you want it, and comes away leaving nothing. It also returns the desk space the monitor's original stand was using. Check the clamp range against your desk thickness, and check the monitor has VESA holes — details in the monitor guide.

2. A freestanding or clamp-mounted light

Overhead lighting in rentals is whatever the landlord chose, usually one ceiling fixture in the middle of the room. You cannot rewire it, and you do not need to. A clamp lamp on the desk edge fixes the working area, and a floor lamp fixes the rest of the room.

3. An under-desk cable tray that clamps

Most cable trays are sold to be screwed into the underside of the desk. Clamp-mounted ones exist and hold the same weight for the same money. If the desk is furnished by the landlord, this is the version to buy.

4. Plug-in everything

No hardwired anything. Plug-in power strips, plug-in lighting, plug-in warmth. Obvious, but it rules out a surprising amount of what gets recommended for home offices — smart switches that replace wall plates, hardwired under-cabinet lighting, anything requiring an electrician.
